Can I update Ipad Air 2 from 9.3.1 to 15?

I have an iPad Air 2 - model A1566 that is still on iOS 9.3.1. Can it be updated? When I go to Software Update it says an update is available and it shows that it is iOS 15. But Download and Install is grayed out.

I've connected it to my laptop which has iTunes installed. I'm aware iTunes was discontinued. But it did let me do an update to iTunes.

However, each time I try to get the software update to work on the iPad it just says I have to first install the upgrade for iTunes. But I already did. Like a vicious cycle that never lets me do the update.

Am I just out of luck on this one?

Thanks!!

The iPad Air 2 will run iPadOS 15.6, which is the latest. However, if you are still on iOS 9.3.1 you will probably need to do this with a computer. See the instructions here. Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

I'm on a pc. I see that it is now in the process of backing it up. So maybe it will work once that's done. Crossing my fingers anyway. The page of instructions that your message linked out to gave me a little bit more detail than previous pages I had searched. But my screen doesn't have a 'Summary' tab for my device.

Again -- I'll wait until the backup is complete and see if that helps anything.

Thanks!!
