sound not working on studio display

Mac Studio computer with two Studio Display monitors, macOS 12.5. Sound is not working on either of the Studio Displays for any type of sound - music played through QuickTime, any sound through web browser, etc. Sound works for about 2 seconds, then nothing. Sound works normally through computer (Mac Studio) speakers. Switching sound setting back to Studio Display results in sound for 2 seconds, a brief scratch-like sound, then no sound at all. Switching to the other Studio display gets same result - sound for 2 seconds, brief scratch-like sound, then silence. Switching back to computer (Mac Studio) speakers results in normal sound.

I tried troubleshooting steps - connectors, switched Thunderbolt cables for both Studio Displays, power-down reboot, etc.

Could it be a bug in macOS 12.5? I just upgraded to macOS 12.5 about 24 hours ago.

The solution was to re-boot (or re-start, in Apple-speak) the Studio Displays (not the Mac Studio or other computer). Since there is no power switch for the Studio Display monitor, re-booting requires physically unplugging the power cable from the wall, then reconnecting after a minute.

It is important to wait a minute or so after unplugging the power cord of the Studio Display before re-connecting to the power outlet. Don't reconnect the power cable immediately after disconnecting.

The specific update to macOS 12.5 was apparently a red herring. It may be that any update to macOS might require a re-boot of the Studio Displays, in addition to re-booting the computer.

The answer was found in a post in the Mac Power Users forum (https://talk.macpowerusers.com). This sound output problem with the Studio Display is an issue already known to Apple Engineering. I learned this from an AppleCare technical support representative. Interestingly, the AppleCare support rep did not know about the re-boot solution - I found that in the forum mentioned above.

I have just spoken with Apple tech support. This is an early known issue. The fix is to unplug the Studio Display from power and disconnect the Thunderbolt cable from the Mac Studio, wait a minute, reconnect, and restart. Mic and sound work again. Reportedly, this issue does not recur once this fix is applied but if it does at least I now know how to, at least temporarily, fix it.

OOOPS! I didn't see the fix above. You have it!

I've tried all the options of turning off the display and unplugging it for over an hour and then overnight with no change in audio cutting out on the Displays and I have two of them. I've tried Apple's options for the preferences without any change (which for those of use that have used Macs for a long time is just plain insulting).

I recently upgraded to Monterey 12.5 and it started right after that, within about 4 days. Prior to that I had NO issues.

One Display will intermittently work for like 30 seconds and then it makes a scratchy sound and it's just gone. I notice if it does start to work once I have plugged them back in --- as soon as I try to use the wireless trackpad or wireless keyboard the audio immediately cuts out and is permanently gone again.

I can do airplay or use the Studio speakers without issue so this is definitely a Display issue. The music plays fine on my Samsung TV using airplay with my Bose speaker.

I need to edit videos and this is getting frustrating. Why'd I spend so much Apple? Are you now putting out crap like Microsoft always has???? This is not good quality control.
