iPhone 8 mic works in Camera, not in Voice Memos or Phone

It's puzzling to me how sound comes through just fine when I'm recording a video but I can't be heard on Phone calls (either with Phone or WhatsApp). Trying Voice Memos results either in a series of clicks or just a background hum.

Has anyone else been able to resolve a situation like this on their own? Thanks in advance for any insights.

P.S. The support page called If the microphones on your iPhone aren't working - Apple Support is useless so please don't recommend it.

Alancito, remember that the microphones have all been shown to work when recording videos. It's only when using Voice Memos or trying to make a Phone call or use WhatsApp that they don't.

Hi erictheise,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having an issue with your microphones on your iPhone 8. We'd like to help.

You mentioned that the article you looked at was not helpful. While it may not have fixed your issue, it may have told you some good information about which microphone isn't working. Let's see if we can isolate that a bit more so we can work on a plan to help you get it resolved.

When you say it works when recording a video, does it record audio when you are using the rear facing camera, the forward facing camera, or both? Since different microphones are used each time, knowing how each works will be helpful. The microphones used here are by the camera on rear facing videos and by the receiver in forward facing videos.

You then mentioned that the microphones weren't working when you were on the phone or using Voice Memos. When on the phone, are you holding the iPhone to your ear? If so, that uses the microphone on the bottom of the phone and you may be having an issue with that one. With Voice Memos, it depends on how you're recording the memo as to which microphone it uses but it would either be the receiver microphone or the bottom microphones.

Using that information, are you able to isolate this issue to a specific microphone? Let us know what you find.

Cheers!

erictheise,

Thanks for providing the community with those additional details. When you have a free moment, please try to Force restart your iPhone by following the steps in the link below in the section titled “Force restart iPhone 8 or iPhone SE (2nd generation and later)”, followed by testing, and let us know if the original issue persists.

Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

While a force restart can seem unimportant, it can resolve many minor issues with the device.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

eric ~ Apple considers 80% as borderline unhealthy – and your 83% Maximum Capacity is close to that.

Coupled with the battery being 3½ years-old, the mic problems may be due to a weak, aging battery. Consider having the battery replaced:

Hi Colleen, thanks for your response.

Following https://descriptive.audio/where-is-the-microphone-on-iphone-8/ I tried a few things.

I made three videos, speaking close to all three microphones. Sound was recorded consistently in all three cases.

I made three Voice Memos, speaking close to all three microphones. No sound was recorded in any of the cases.

Seems inconvenient to make three phone calls where the person at the other end can't hear me; is there enough to go on here?

Thanks, Eric
