Beats Fit Pro earbuds will not connect if the case is dead

I received my brand new Beats Fit Pro yesterday. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize my adapter did not have a USB-C input, so I ordered a new one right away. Luckily my Beats came with the case charged at 20% and the buds about 70%. That got me through a work meeting/calls yesterday, and a few work calls today.

When I connected my left earbud for a call earlier today, I saw that both L/R were at 100%, but the case was at 2%. No worries, because my new charger was arriving by end of day. However, after a few calls, I popped the left earbud out and returned it to the case to conserve battery life and ensure I could get through the rest of my workday.

However, about 20 min after returning them to the case, I tried to use the left bud again and it would not connect. Neither bud will connect. I’ve tried popping out each bud individually, together, leaving them in the case with the case open…over and over and over. NOTHING.

Is this normal?? I’m utterly astounded. What good is this? I see so many ways for this to go badly, whether an inadvertent disconnect while away from the case, power outage, etc.

I had an important work meeting via Zoom and had to SCRAMBLE through my drawers til I found an old $1 corded set of earbuds with a mic, then a lightning adapter to plug them into my MacBook. (I ordered these new Beats because my Beats3 died completely the other day, so no, I had no backups ready, and was literally counting the minutes for delivery as a lifeline.)

Were it not for the analog set I dug out in a pinch, I would have been utterly embarrassed at this meeting, using my MacBook internal mic, which offers bare minimum functionality. Is there a workaround here? For the money I spent, this seems like a terrible flaw.

*with the charged case.

I didn’t have any cable before. That’s why the case died.

On the road, away from home, I might not have access to a cable or outlet. It’s important that people know not to disconnect their earbuds if the case is at 0% with no charging source. The earbuds will stay connected if they’re already there, but will NOT reconnect if you disconnect them and have a dead case.

Come on, guys. The earbuds simply don’t connect if the case is dead. Stop gaslighting me.

Hi there. Thank you for your response and suggestions. At the time of my posting, I had already repeated all of those steps a number of times (at least a dozen), and attempted the hard reset (the non-responsive case at 0% did not cooperate very well with that one), and many other combination moves in an attempt at Beats Bluetooth voodoo. Nothing worked. It was like trying to connect to a device that is turned off.

However, about 30 minutes after I posted this, my USB-C cables arrived. As SOON as I plugged in the case to charge, the earbuds immediately connected.

I’m attaching a screenshot I took at the moment of connection to document that the earbuds both had a charge, and the case was at 0%.

My working theory remains (until perhaps another firmware update, at least) that Beats Fit Pro earbuds will not connect if the case is dead.

Hi rage80hd,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. If you are unable to connect your Beats, try a reset and then try connecting again. To rest them use these steps:

  1. Place both earbuds in the charging case. Leave the case open.
  2. Press and hold the system button on the case for 15 seconds or until the LED indicator light flashes red and white.
  3. Release the system button.

The LED indicator light will continue to flash white, which means that you can pair your Beats Fit Pro with your iPhone, Mac, Android device, or other device again.

Thanks

Exactly. If this is how the pairing works, fine. It’s not necessarily a deal-breaker, but it should just be made clear in the instructions/documentation so people can decide. To pretend it’s not, and to reply with a gaslighting “glad things are working as they should now that you got your charging cable” is so bizarre. Apple: We stan; just tell us what the functional requirements/limitations are for pairing so people can plan ahead. For example: I wouldn’t have disconnected my earbuds ahead of my meeting if I knew they wouldn’t reconnect with a 0% case. And I bet @max805 would’ve left his buds connected when he left for the gym. Instead, folks end up caught unawares and unprepared. And that leads to a poor level of satisfaction.

(The mic quality on calls/zoom is also beyond awful, I’m told, so I will probably have to return these anyway. Bummer. But that’s for another thread.)
