I would try unpairing the AirPods, then resetting them using the support guide:
How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro - Apple Support
Then after resetting reconnect them to your phone. If the issue persists then reach out to Apple support or visit a store. The store can run diagnostics to further evaluate the issue. If they are under warranty or AppleCare coverage then they may swap one or both out.
