Home kit connection to apple tv+ app ? : Instructions are not consistent and don't work

I have the HomeKit app and want to control smart plugs while away from home. After years of using wemo plugs, the do not function in today's environment (they are 3-4 years old). I am purchasing newer produced plugs and have HomeKit on my Iphone and on my tv, the appletv+ app. (not the old box). They claim that it's easy to use the apple tv+ as a hub. Can it be done?????? and how to do it... thanks so much for any help ...

There may be some confusion about the required devices.

You’ll need a home hub to use HomeKIt. The home hub can be a modern Apple TV box, a HomePod or HomePod mini, or an iPad.

Set up your HomePod, HomePod mini, Apple TV, or iPad as a home hub - Apple Support

The Apple TV app or Apple TV+ app is not sufficient.

The packaging or documentation should tell you if an accessory is HomeKit compatible. Apple also has a list of (current?) HomeKit devices. Else contact the manufacturer for a definitive answer.

Thanks so much. I do have an Ipad but am concerned that if I take the IPAD while traveling, will it still work as a hub if I take it with me? Thanks again.. much appreciated for the quick response and help...

Again, thanks so much for the quick response. I hate to have to purchase a HomePod mini just to make a few smart lights to make it look like we are home. Anyone have a better suggestion, I am open... thanks again

Again, these responses have been GREAT... One last question , I have 4 older Belkin/Wemo smart plugs with no code to use with home kit. Any suggestions on how to get the code IF THEY ARE COMPATIBLE with Home Kit... Again, thanks so much all.

No, the home hub must stay in the home to fulfill that hub function.
