New iPod touch 7th gen not working with my new Sony docking station

I have recently purchased a new iPod touch 7th generation. I also purchased a used Sony ICFCS15ipn with the 8 pin lightning connector. Before I purchased this I was assured that it was compatible with the iPod 7th gen but I cannot get any sound out of the speakers on the docking station. Tried the ipod touch 6th gen and same thing. Was I scammed into buying the Sony unit for over $200?
