trading in ipad

Okay, so I got a brand new 9th gen iPad as a gift. but I want to trade this iPad for a 5th gen iPad air. But when I try to it says I need the serial number. But I didn't want to open it. so do I need to set it up before I can trade it in?

The iPad serial number will be visible on the sealed box…

If eligible for trade-in, it will make absolutely no difference to the value if the iPad is in a sealed box or not - as the iPad will have to be assessed prior to being accepted for the trade-in process. Be aware that trade-in values, for eligible devices, will be considerably less than than the initial purchase cost.

You might be best advised to sell the new/sealed iPad privately - and use the proceeds towards purchase of the iPad that you prefer.
