Markup annotations disappearing while drawing on pdf

I keep having this issue where into around 15-45 minutes of annotating a pdf with my Apple Pencil in the "Files" app, the screen will flash/re-render and all drawings/annotations since I have opened the document are completely gone with no option for recovery.

The pdfs I'm editing are stored locally just under "On My iPad" and the issue happens regardless whether I open the file directly or choose the Markup option with the context menu.

Markup annotations that are saved after I close the document remain there after I open it up again.

I am currently using an iPad Pro 10.5 in (model MQDT2LL/A), iPadOS 15.5, and a Gen 1 Apple Pencil.

The only quick-fix for this is to periodically close the document every few minutes to avoid losing work but this is difficult since I can't predict exactly when the bug will happen.

Thanks for reaching out, GenericUserGuy.

It sounds like you're losing some unsaved work when annotating a PDF file. We can help.

A great first step is to refresh your device and make sure nothing unusual is causing the behavior. The best way to do this is to Restart your iPad.

Give that a try first, and see if the behavior continues. If it does, you may want to Contact Apple for support and service to report the behavior.

Hope that helps!

Take care.
