Charged for "promotional" gift card?

I'm trying to buy an iPad Pro from the Apple Education Store with Apple's current $100 Gift Card "promotion" and when I try to check out, I get the $100 Education Discount, but then I'm also getting *charged* for the $100 gift card. Will this be refunded to me later or something? I don't even want the gift card if I have to pay for it, but there's no option to remove it from my cart.

No, you are indeed "charged" for the gift card. But, the price of the device is reduced by the gift card amount. So, in essence, you pay the full amount of the device and gain a $100 gift card.

In other words. If the iPad lists at $600. You pay $600 (it's just $500 for the device plus $100 for the gift card). But, you get the iPad ($600) and the gift card ($100), a total of $700.
