ipod classic 1st gen not recognized by M1 Macbook

I'm trying to hook up my first Generation iPod classic to my new m1 MacBook Pro. I purchased the correct dongles (Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt to USB-C). Unfortunately my Mac won't recognise that something is plugged in, I checked the ports in system information and nothing shows up. I tried connecting the iPod with a second cable and even tried to hook it up to my older MacBook 2015 and my even older Macbook from 2010 yet on none of them the iPod shows up.

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Thank you!
