iCloud Drive: not syncing files

I have trouble syncing my files to iCloud Drive, some folders are constantly in "waiting for upload" status. This is across different WIFIs, reboots, and passed time. In my iCloud Drive I have some small Git repositories, and I don't know if its access patterns triggers some kind of behavioural bug. There are recent threads about this upon googling.

This is of concern for the integrity of my data, that I've trusted the devices with.

Is there some workaround that will make my drive sync for now? Running latest Monterey, 12.4.

Hi there. My investigations:

  • I talked with technician at mStore in Sweden (Apple reseller) and he recommended to move out and back in the folders that didn't sync. This suggests people have had this problem before. I tried, did not help.
  • Regular rebooting didn't help.
  • Rebooting into safe mode (red font saying "Safe boot" at menubar) didn't help.
  • I tried setting up a test account with iCloud but upon registering it asked for a phone number and I cannot supply that.
  • My best lead is what googling "apple icloud drive not syncing git" results in, that is that Git can be the cause. For instance this link: iCloud for Mac is stuck on "waitin… | Apple Developer Forums

This is a MacBook 2017 so the warranty has expired. What do you suggest as action?

Hello fenglich,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

If we understand your post correctly, you're having trouble syncing your files to iCloud Drive on your Mac. We'd like to help!

Let's try setting up a test user account to see if you get the same issue.

We also recommend trying to start up in safe mode and see if the issue persists.

Hi fenglich’s

I have a similar issue since the beginning of this year. I have already post some threads in this forum, but I did not receive a solution yet. I have also talked to Apple Support, but no solution was found. Please, see the thread I have posted last month

File uploaded in iCloud drive, but folder… - Apple Community

I think it is bug. And it is very annoying. My research in internet shows that this issue has been present on macOS for quite some time. Hope Apple fix it soon.

Regards,

Luiz

Hi fenglich,

I found this new post below in the Apple Developer Forums (https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/651829?page=4).

A simple “killall bird” command in the terminal works perfectly for me. It is probably related to the synchronization process priority, which got so low in priority that stuck in the progress. When you kill the process the system automatically restart it and finish the sync correctly.

So, I will try and post the result here.

So, it seems like there's some cache laying around saying folder(s) aren't synced, while their content actually are. An update from me:

  • I updated to the recent update that was out some days ago (Monterey 12.5) and it did not solve it.
  • I was on phone with Apple Support as suggested by Dorain1 and he couldn't detect a user error but instead also concluded it seems like a bug. The link to this discussion was added to the case. Feel free to ask for case number.

I can't see what to do from my side than to hope this bug gets focus and is fixed in next update. If anyone has ideas or want to escalate this case, feel free.

Hi Ali,

I read your comment and the article you linked.

The article doesn't advice against storing folders, and people, like me, store folders in iCloud Drive. However, it does advice against storing app folders and libraries, but a Git repository is neither of those. I have 67,4 GB space available.

I might be wrong in my idea that this problem is caused by Git.

Awaiting suggestions.

No, the folders that are not syncing aren't Git repositories, but regular folders containing documents, PDFs and so forth. They all have status "Waiting to upload" and an arrow up indicating 3 MB or so. I've tried moving out and in these folders, but the status and remaining data to upload remains the same. Hence, it's as if it has stalled. Other folders and files are syncing fine, at least appears so.

If I look inside one of the non-syncing folders (225 KB remaining), I find no individual file/folder within that is waiting for upload. So the status is "false". Maybe it's synced, but the status is wrong.

(However, I have two small Git repositories in the drive that I use daily. A diary, for instance.)
