I’ve had my iPhone Pro Max and Apple Watch for a couple years now, and the Apple fitness app was Free.
Now I can only use it on my iWatch but my iPhone wants me to subscribe for $12.99 a month.
Why is that?

The fitness program where you can workout alongside pre-recorded trainers and find out a regimen for you is the only thing that costs $12.99 from Apple's fitness app. The statistic tracking that grants you rewards as you complete challenges and close rings is always free for the user.

You don’t have to subscribe; a subscription offers additional features and services. If you don’t subscribe it will work the same way it always has.

maybe I’m remembering it incorrectly.
I thought I use to be able to begin and pause workouts, like hiking or outdoor runs, paddling ect from the iPhone app itself.
Lawerence, sorry, I misspelled your name.
I’ve always done that from my watch. And even if you use the paid Fitness+ features you would still have to do it from your watch.
