My card reader will not recognize any SDC I insert. The same SDC's are readable/writeable using an external usb card reader. I have confirmed System Preferences as suggested in several posts and by Apple to display the SDC's in Finder and on the Desktop. Disk Utility reports the SDC as MBR, formatted with Fat32 when read from the external card reader attached by usb. My macOS is Monterey 12.4.

I had been unable to get the card reader built into the Mac to work but all my SD's work in an external reader I have. This all occurred while I was upgrading to an external SSD. After setting up the SSD with a clean copy of Monterey the Mac reader works fine.

Try pushing a little harder to make sure that the card is fully inserted in the slot.
If that doesn't help, then I see nothing wrong with use an external card reader. In fact, I prefer using my corded external card reader instead of reaching and fumble around trying to plug a card into the back of my Mac's.
You are right, the external reader is more convenient but the Mac reader is supposed to work, darn it! Anywho, I added a bootable external SSD to improve performance unrelated to the reader and, yup, the Mac reader now works. Apple, got to love/hate 'em.

Maybe your internal card reader is broken. I have a 2009 iMac with a non functional card reader inside. It can happen
