My friend’s iPhone is lost and we have been trying to track it using the find my phone app and it says no devices. What might be the reason for that?

If the phone's battery has died then you will no longer be able to find it. Sign into your iCloud.com account, click on Find My Phone. You should be able to see the last reported location if it was reported within the last 24 hours. The data are only retained for 24 hours then deleted.
