The new Mac mini sees "through" my A/V Receiver and only wants to send audio to my TV. I want the HDMI Audio to go to the A/V receiver, and let the receiver pass the video fro the Mac to my TV.

How do I get the "new" Mac mini to recognize and detect the Samsung A/V receiver using the HDMI connection?

Are you sure the audio is not going to the receiver? If you play something with say a Dolby D or DTS sound track, does the receiver say it is decoding it?

For what it's worth, have a MacMini that is used as a home media center. It is connected to a Yamaha receiver and the video is passed through to a Samsung TV. In my Mac audio settings the interface is referred to as a "Samsung" however, the Yamaha receiver is actually decoding all audio.

If in fact, the sound is not being picked up by the receiver, then the issue is with a receiver setting and not the Mac. The Mac only streams the HDMI signals and has no idea what is being done afterward as it has no control over where the audio channels go afterward

Thanks for the reply. I tried all the settings possible on the Samsung receiver. The "audio assign" settings allow for HDMI, COAX, or Optical, and it's set for "HDMI" as it should be.

The older 2012 Mac mini recognized the Samsung for audio, and understood the monitor was the big SONY TV. This new-er (late 2014) Mac mini indicates a connection only to the SONY TV in both the audio and the monitor/video settings while looking at the Preferences screen. It's like it sees through the receiver. If I can't find a setting I'm missing, I'll just probably run a straight cable to the TV's other HDMI input, and listen to the Mac mini audio with the receiver set to "TV" using the HDMI ARC function of the receiver. I didn't want to filter the audio through my TV, but it'll have to do. :-/

It just occurred to me. On the old Mac mini, when I was using the HDMI audio for the first time, the Samsung receiver didn't decode the audio properly because the Samsung wanted to do the decoding and separate the audio into the appropriate channels, not the source (the Mac mini).

I had to reconfigure the HDMI Audio on the 2012 Mac mini to send 2ch STEREO to the receiver, so the receiver could decode whatever Dolby surround signal was embedded onto the stereo track.

This new Mac Mini appears not to have a command to open/edit that setting. I can't find any HDMI Audio config screen on the late 2014 Mac mini searching the HELP file for O/S 12-Monterrey. (sigh)
