migration assistant fails at closing open software

trying to migrate from old 2011 MacBook air to 2017 MacBook air and

migration assistant won't work on old machine.

what should i do to make it work to transfer files.

i really don't want to have to use jump drives.

I would never use a jump drive; we dumped them years ago.


If all else fails, get a small portable SSD, 250 GB maybe, and use the tried and true copy and paste method that always seems to work so well.


Once done, use the SSD in place of cards, thumb drives flash drives and etc.
