Monitoring level in Logic Pro

How do I adjust my monitoring level from within Logic?

I ask this seemingly straightforward question because I’ve discovered the reason for the low levels in my audio mixes has been caused by my reducing the Master fader gain to adjust my monitoring level, with the incorrect assumption that that wasn’t also adjusting my Stereo Out gain. Today I see it is reducing my stereo out gain even though that fader is of course still at unity.

My recording levels and gain staging is fine by the way.

So how do I set my monitor level while also not effecting my Stereo Out and thereby compromising my song bounces/mixes. I appreciate I can do it from my Apogee interface screen but surely there is a way from within Logic itself?

I’m certain this is the issue behind the many people talking about the level of their mixes.

Thanks in advance to the Logic community.

Okey dokey.

The Apoggee Element 24 doesn't have a dedicated Output Volume knob on the front.

It sounds like you are getting your record levels etc fine going into Logic.

For the Element 24, you leave your Logic main outs at 0bd and use the Element Control software (Essentials Window - Main Output) to control the volume level of your Genelecs.

I have a MOTU with a dedicated Output knob on the front so my Genelecs are always at full volume and I control the volume via the knob on the MOTU.

So just use the Main Output in the contol software to control your room volume.

Alternatively you can get a controller like an Avocet or MAckie Big Knob and put it between the output of your Element 24 and your Genelecs and adjust control room volume from there.

Hope some of this helps.

Thanks for your reply and apologies for my tardy response (work has been **** plus I’ve been trying to formulate a sensible reply).

I’m using the Apogee Element 24 into Genelec powered monitors.

After further fiddling around I’ve come to the conclusion that my problem is that I thought I didn’t really need to use the Apogee interface screen to really do anything once I’m in Logic. That I would control all my monitoring and levels, both into Logic for recording and to my speakers for monitoring, from within Logic. I’ve realised that’s probably misguided and that I need to use the Apogee interface in conjunction with Logic.

Basically I’m a little confused about the actual signal flow both into and out of Logic.

Further to that end, my sound engineer friend has been posing various questions to me and I find I’m unable to answer many of them with any confidence, particularly around input levels, their control, and how to monitor correctly.

So he’s given me a question to post which I will do separately to this one.

Sincere thanks for your input though and any comments you may wish to make would be appreciated but no reply would also be understandable.
