Images on Mac Desktop displaying as Images Preview Icon

My mac desktop used to display images. I updated to Monetery. This is what is happening now. Some display as images while others are showing as a Imagine preview icon and then open to the image which is not helpful. And, images that I had in a document file are displaying in this fashion as well. Suggestions?
