How to listen to music apple HomePod

Do I have to pay for Apple Music on HomePod to listen to music? Can I listen to free music besides being attached to my phone?

you can use airplay from your devices

or you can use radio

Listen to the radio in the Apple Music app - Apple Support (IE)

anything else would need apple music or apple itunes match
