Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones not working with my Mac since upgrading to Monterey

MacBook Pro 2018 had no problems connecting to Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones until I upgraded to Monterey. Now completely useless with Monterey 12.2.1 although fine with IOS. The Sony firmware is the latest version. Thankful for any ideas!

if it was me then I would make the mac forget the headset, put the headset into pairing mode

and pair it once again
