Why am I unable to download Mac Os Big Sur from here macappstores://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-big-sur/id1526878132?mt

Hello Apple community - Seeking some guidance on getting Mac Os Big Sur. I followed the instructions posted on the apple website on how to download from the App store (macOS Big Sur); It triggers software update but it just hangs and says "finding update", and nothing gets downloaded. My iMac is not compatible with Monterrey so i need to stop at Big Sur.

Thanks in advance,

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

Okay, please do the following:

Please restart the computer in Safe Mode per the directions in the  How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support link.

Note: If you are using a wireless keyboard please either plug it in using the supplied Lightning cable that shipped with it. If you are using a legacy keyboard or a third-party keyboard that does not have re-charging abilities, please use any USB keyboard. Also note that a Safe Mode restart may require you to hold down the shift key for up to 5 minutes before the computer starts in Safe Mode. You will know it is in Safe Mode when you see

Safe Mode” in the upper right of the display.

Next, please while in Safe Mode, use the link for getting old versions of Mac OS and use that. If for some reason it does no work, that means you:

  • Have something blocking the process such as installed antivirus app, cleaning app etc. In that case each should be uninstalled per the developers instructions and another Safe Mode restart.
  • You are not following the directions Apple provided and need to go back to see where you goofed.

Thank you for you reply. However, that is the exact link where I had gone and got nowhere. That's where the "finding update" message with no Mac Os Big Sur download is at.

The link does work…

One possibility is Big Sur requires a Mid-2014 or later iMac. If that's what you have, try while in Safe Mode.

Is there a list somewhere of cleaning/antivirus apps to be aware of?

Usual suspects for weird problems are all add-on anti-malware, all add-on anti-virus, all add-on cleaners, all add-on VPN apps, as well as content filters in browser extensions, and content filters in firewalls.

All add-on anti-malware apps and all add-on cleaners and all add-on VPN client apps (add-on VPN apps other than those intended for connecting into the internal network of an affiliated organization) are potential suspects here, and all can do things which can stomp on normal operations. Remove them all, per the vendors’ instructions, restart, and try again. (Various of these add-ons can only be removed with vendor-provided removal tools, too.)

Try rebooting your router, as those too can get tangled.
