my macbook air cannot find my hp printer

Periodically my mb air cannot find my printer.The printer is showing in my Preferences. It is showing as the Default printer. I've tried restarting the printer, re-doing my wireless connection on the printer and I don't think it is the printer. The best remedy is to restart my laptop. That of course can be annoying. It happens about once a week. Any ideas what is going on?
