I have a new M1 iMac and the transfer from my old iMac went well, but the external hard drive I was using as Time Machine won't accept backups from my new Mac, -Help!

What external drive and how old is it?
If it was inexpensive and more than a few of years old, then it is probably best to replace it with a new external drive.
If it is decent drive and less than a few of years old, then erase and re-format it to use with the newer macOS.

Many thanks. That's just what I did and it's worked fine.
Use Disk Utility to format the EHD and then Time Machine should work fine. If you need help getting it set up again, please use Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support for instructions.
Format drive to APFS (TM will default to this anyway with Monterey) and start fresh.
Assuming the drive is healthy, reformat it as Apple advises and it should work just fine.
