Can one use an Apple TV remote to surf cable channels? (channel up / down)

Can one use an Apple TV remote to surf cable channels? Nearly all remote have a volume up/down button AND a channel up/down button. The channel up/down button allows one to channel surf. However, the Apple TV remote only has the volume up/down button. Is there a way to use the AppleTV remote to channel up/down instead of having to open the channel guide?

The Channel up/down virtual buttons are in the software remote on iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. These can be used with certain TV provider apps on the Apple TV box, that are programmed to support these buttons.

I can only speak for my own experience. Like @Urquhart says the app itself has to support channel up/down. My provider is Spectrum and the Spectrum app does indeed support channel up/down but only with the Remote app on my iPhone, iPad, not on the hardware remote suppled with the Apple TV.

So, depending on your provider’s app or other streaming app like Sling, Google TV, etc. , they may support channel up/down but only on the iPhone or iPad Remote app.
