time machine from big sur onto monterey

hi all.

i have a big sur machine here and am about to receive the new m1 max macbook pro. wondering what the easiest way of getting all my apps, settings, preferences onto the new mac will be.

i don’t want to have to start again from scratch.

the only question i have really is that will my time machine backup do this if my machine is big sur but the new one is monterey?

i can’t upgrade my current machine to monterey as i need to keep it as big sur for compatibility reasons.

whats the best way to do this?

cheers!

When you initially startup a new Mac you will get the option to transfer information from another Mac or Time Machine backup (or Windows computer too for data). Therefore have the other computer running and connected to your network or the Time Machine backup connected to old computer.

Transfer your data to your new MacBook Pro - Apple Support

Then when you get the option to transfer data transfer what you want. I recommend transfering User data only and maybe apps you use. You can then download apps you use and add the setting you want o the new Mac. This results in less junk being transferred to the new Mac.
