Accent Marks not working in macOS Monterey

Hi

I've recently upgraded from an old 2013 MacBook Pro retina to the MacBook Pro M1 Max. Everything is great except one thing, on my old MBP I could add accents to letters by holding down the letter ("e" or "a" for example) and a mini menu would pop to show which accents I could add by clicking on a number.

As I live in France this functionality was really useful but seems like it doesn't exist in Monterey?

I have checked the keyboard settings in System Preferences, key repeat is on with a delay.

Monterey still has this feature. Sometimes it can be revived this way:

open Terminal app and type

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true

and then restart.
