Until the update to Mac OS Monterey 12.4 for MacBook Air 2019, I could always make accents appear by holding a relevant key and then choosing the desired accent. I need to type in multiple languages on a regular basis, making this feature extremely important for me. Now, when I attempt to use it, the letter merely repeats multiple times. How do I fix this?

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true
and restart

Thank you for your response Kaz. The first option in the article is exactly what I used to be able to do but can no longer do. The second option requires too much time and relearning. So, I am looking for a way to restore the ability to do what the article says I should be able to do.
Thank you Tom. I have never used the Terminal app without an Apple Care rep walking me through it. Once I enter the text you put here, do I need to do anything else to activate the command, like pressing return? Or do I just enter the text and then immediately reboot the computer?
