With most recent update I note loss of function when I want to close apps when an app becomes unresponsive....
I used to be able to dbl press home button, select and 'hold' with finger and quickly drag the app preview off of the screen....that no longer works.
So what pray tell is the magic wand now to do such a thing??

Swipe upwards from the bottom edge to the centre of your screen - and pause briefly before lifting your finger from the screen. This will open the Task Switcher, from which you can force-close an App (as before) by swiping the corresponding App window off the top of the screen.

If by Task Switcher you mean the array of apps appearing as mini windows...?
That works....but I can't for the life of me shut them down by the swipe off one off of the top of the screen.....it appears to behave that way but when I go back to the Task Switcher array it's still there.

...and while it does work it is NOT ANYTHING like it was before - it was so smooth and quick to close apps - now, I often have to repeat the swipes several times and it has the irritating step where (sometimes) if you manage to close the app one can't see the rest of the remaining app tiles still open....you have to start from the beginning.
Hope this is resolved soon. I wonder if there are other similar complaints??
I kept trying as you suggested but to no avail......then I unlocked screen orientation to vertical format....then it worked!!
There is clearly a bug....

Good to learn that you have resolved the issue. This is the first report, of which I am aware, that cites the Screen Rotation Lock as interfering with the iPadOS App Switcher.
Update your iPadOS to 15.1. It has been released. See if that fixes your issue.
Saw the update...did as suggested and no cigar (i.e. no difference).
My old iPad Air (vers 12.5.5) works like a charm wrt this function.
So problem remains I'm afraid...thxs for replies to date.
