MacBook Air 2020 (M1) and iPhone backup

I tried to backup my iPhone for the first time since getting the new MacBook Air. There is 31.7GB of data on my iPhone to be backed up and on my MacBook, 446.36GB of space is still available.

However, when I try to backup, I get an error message saying, "Could not backup the iPhone because not enough free space is available on this Mac."

Any help appreciated.
