Background audio interference

My MacBook Pro is running the latest updated Big Sur and my audio interface (RME Babyface) is registering -35db interference noise: continual buzzing and operational noise from the computer ie: scratching noises from CPU activity. All my software is up to date and I am aware that the laptop has a noisy cooling fan. I have separated all external devices to exclude earth-looping by reducing the whole set-up to just the laptop and sound-card. The problem remains with just the buzzing which is so loud that I cannot use the laptop for recording.

Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software when it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility. And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which will be created again automatically as needed.
