connecting to itunes with disabled ipod touch 7

I have scearch and looked at ways to get my sons ipod touch 7 to connect to itunes. It is disabled and is on the screen that says "disabled connect to itunes". I have had no luck at holding the home and sleep buttons down. it keeps coming back up to the same screen as before. I am completely clueless on what to do next. Any help would be nice.

Turn it off and then press and hold the Volume Down button while connecting it to a computer. See the full details in If you forgot the passcode on your iPod touch, or your iPod touch is disabled - Apple Support
