We need to know the year of your 21.5" iMac, at the least you will need a Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter. If you have a Mac that Thunderbolt 3 then you will need a second adapter a Thunderbolt2 to USB C adapter.

No, there is not. Each technology (i.e. FireWire > Thunderbolt) has to be converted. That is why adapters are needed.
All the adapters mentioned above are needed to connect it. There is no other way.
Cheers,
Jack
Nope you need all 3 adapters plus your Firewire cable. Because you are connecting fairly old technology to newer technology you need all of the adapters in order to connect your camera to your Mac. It it all seems a little overwhelming you can take your videos to a video conversion service, let them know the file format you want your video in and they will do it for a price.
Forgot to mention that I tried DV-USB cable and it didn't work
It's 2019 iMac
A 2019 iMac has Thunderbolt 3 which is also a USB C port. That means you will need both of the adapters I suggested.
Plus a FW800 to FW400 adapter.
Wow, this user is going to go into debt buying all these adapters. Perhaps its time for a more up-to-date camera.
I'm transferring my video archives. I don't understand this whole talk about adapters. I'm sure there's got to be a simpler solution how to connect the camera to imovie
