iphone 12 pro videos won't play on my macbook pro

Videos taken on my iphone 12 pro won't play on my Macbook Pro (late 2013) running El Capitan 10.11.6.

They do upload to the cloud but when I try to play them through iphoto I get a big question mark and the message "Photos cannot play this video. Do you want to try opening it in QuickTime Player?" When I click OK that doesn't work either. Further, photos I've taken on the iphone 12 pro texted from that phone to another iphone also won't view or will videos play.

MacBook Pro 15″, OS X 10.11

Figured it out, had to change setting under camera from High Efficiency to Most Compatible

Settings>Camera<Format<Most Compatible
