Videos on Mac

Today I took some videos on my iPhone. They play fine on the iPhone. They upload automatically to my Mac thru iCloud but they won't play in Photos. I get a message "Photos cannot play this video. Do you want to try opening it in QuickTime Player?" I try opening them in Quicktime but they won't play there either. Any suggestions?

iMac, OS X 10.11

You didn't say what codec the video is (apparently your Mac is running El Capitan?). If the codec is HEVC, then maybe this helps to fix it.
