MacBook Air's volume shoots to maximum whenever I wear earphones

For the past week, my Macbook's volume automatically shoots to maximum whenever I wear earphones. It can happen every 5 minutes or every 5 hours. I have even restarted the laptop but it still happens. How do I resolve this?
