iMac Power/Startup Problem

My 3½ year-old 21.5-inch, gently used iMac, running Catalina, shutdown during normal use. The screen went black and the startup indicator bar appeared, but froze. I held in the power button to completely shutdown the device. The device however would not re-start in the normal manner by pressing the power button.

With the guidance of an Apple tech, I tried re-starting the iMac by holding down the keys P, R, CMD & OPT, and then pressing the power button. After this restart process I could hear sounds from inside the iMac and could feel the fan discharging air out the back; the screen however remained black.

Apple carry-in service is currently unavailable in my area.

Any suggestions for getting the iMac operational would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Thank you for the response.

I take it that this apparent hardware problem is one that I cannot remedy and that professional service is needed.

Indeed, after failing to restart the iMac myself, I did schedule a carry-in service appointment at a nearby Apple store for tomorrow, Jan. 16. Apple however cancelled the appointment today, Jan. 15, because the store is going to be closed and continue to be closed all next week. (The store is located just outside Washington, DC and the closure is probably due to concern over potential disturbances related to the upcoming presidential inauguration.)

Following the cancellation, I went online and tried to schedule a service appointment at other Apple stores and authorized service centers within a 25-mile radius of my home. Every location has no availability for at least 7 days. So I have little choice but to keep checking online for availability.

Thank you again for taking the time to respond, and I hope you are safe and well during this extraordinary time.

Thank you and I wish the same for you. Did you find any third party AASPs in your general area? I always use a third party rather than an Apple Store due to the large crowds in our local Apple Store, the convenience of their location and I've received great service there.

I am in Northern California and have no idea of any other than Best Buy, however I would never take my Mac to a BB to be repaired.

The only AASPs I've looked at are the ones Apple lists for carry-in service, in addition to its own stores. Like the Apple stores, the AASPs in my area have no scheduling availability for at least a week. My educated guess is that with so many people working from home due to the pandemic, operational computers are in high demand and so are repair services when the devices fail. I plan to continue to try to schedule carry-in service. In the meantime, as we have use of a MacBook, we're not entirely offline and computer deprived.
