How to prevent iOS 14 monthly reminders from showing permanently instead of only showing when due?

If I set a reminder in the reminders app and set a monthly schedule, I can see the reminder. Fine.

But if I mark it as complete, it doesn't disappear.

Instead it just shows the "next month" reminder.

This is no good as I will just become blind to its existence if it is displayed on a permanent basis.

How can I make the reminder only show up when it is due?
