How to successfully transfer videos from mac to external hard drive so the play
i transffered my photos to an external hard drive but none of my videos worked - they come up as pictures and show no option to be played

Do not use drag and drop to save videos somewhere.
Use "File > export > Export unmodified Original".
Not all video formats are supported on macOS 10.15, even if the videos used to play on earlier versions of MacOS X, see:
