external vga monitor issues
my mac book pro does not detect a VGA external monitor (using apple usb-c to hdmi adapter and then a hdmi to vga adapter)

I had similar issue with not getting native resolution on external monitor (apple mini display to hdmi and then hdmi to VGA).
Used a single mini display to VGA adapter which solved the issue.
In your case suggest you to get similar to this one USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter - Apple.
