having trouble with MacBook Air upgrade to Catalina. Air is early 2014 and it's running Mavericks 10.9 now

We're having difficulty upgrading to Catalina on our 2014 MacBook Air. It's currently running Mavericks 10.9. Software Update doesn't seem to be cooperating. Has anyone else had issues like this?
