I'm having issues with with my Mac (os Sierra 10.12.6) with "no updates available" but it won't let me upgrade to Catalina. I don't have a software update icon available in preferences. Any suggestions ?

What's the model of your Mac? It may be incompatibility getting in the way here.

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, click here, and if your MacBook Air is a 2012 or newer model, then on the download link for Catalina.
Catalina and higher won't run 32-bit software; download and use Go64 as well as using the first link above.

I have 2017 Mac with a 64 bit. When I search software update in the system preference box nothing happens. Does that make sense? Sorry still a little new to the Mac world.
There isn't a Software Update pane in Sierra. Use the method described above; if desired, you can get a version newer than Catalina.

OK thx, Ventura can't be downloaded on to this computer it says and not quite enough space left for Catalina (I only have 20 gigs left ) so I will have t get rid of some junk first
