I have a subscription but can't find ANY content that I don't have to pay more for! Am I doing something wrong?
Is there any free content on Apple TV or is a subscription just a waste of time and money?

In the Apple TV app, select the Watch Now tab, then scroll down to Channels, select tv+. The next page will show you just the content that is included with the subscription.
Or watch for the tv+ logo on the promotional tiles.
