I have an iMac (24-inch, Early 2009) with OS X El Capitan, version10.11.6 (15G22010) How do I upgrade to a newer operating software?

The next release after El Capitan was Sierra and that can only be installed if the iMac is Late 2009 or later. See compatibility section in How to upgrade to macOS Sierra - Apple Support
