I’ve an iPod touch, it’s a few years old and not used for a while. Tried to download the Audible app but it said it needed iOS version 13 or higher. Latest I can download to my iPod is iOS version 12.4.8. Is there not a version 13 available for the touch or do I have an old model?

It's too old. A sixth generation iPod touch doesn't have enough RAM for iOS 13, and a seventh wouldn't be on 12.4.8.
