my iCloud is getting full. Is there any way to save old messages somewhere on my computer and then use iCloud only for new messages?

You can drag old eMails into an 'on my Mac' folder.
But, to be honest, I'd upgrade my iCloud storage to handle the larger amounts of eMail - it's pretty cheap; it makes it easier to search for eMails as you don't have to know which folder contains which eMail.
Yes.
Create any mailboxes under “On my Mac”. Move the messages you want from your iCloud mailboxes to your “On my Mac” mailboxes.
Thanks to all. I did move 5 years worth to on my mac from my other mailboxes. I can search there if I need to but rarely need emails that old. I assume this will decrease the amount in iCloud.
It should do, yes. As long as you moved rather than copied the eMails over :-)
