Can I store old messages in iCloud to free up memory from my device and the erase from device and keep only in icloud

No. Any message in iCloud is also on your device. If you delete it on your device, it will delete from the cloud. Might be time to do some housekeeping.

How do I access old messages saved on iCloud? my icloud storage says it is full- mainly from messages...
