Can I back up my photos from iCloud to an external device?

As iCloud is only a syncing service, how can I back up my photos to an external drive? I want to be able to see the photos and access the photos from Photoshop/other, not just transfer to a new device.

Uploading Photos to iCloud Photos I have a bunch of photos on my external hard drive. I want to upload them to iCloud photos to back them up, and make them available in all of my Apple devices. Is this possible? This is NOT backing up the photos on my iPhone. I already do that. I don't need a copy of my photos on my devices. Can I back up my photos to an external drive? Currently, All my photos are on iCloud storage for a monthly fee. Can I also back up photos on external storage? If so, can I just back up my photos on my device?

If you use iCloud photos on your iMac then you can access the photos from there as well... Otherwise you can go to the photos app on your Mac and select the pictures and select File > Export to transfer the pictures to an external storage device. This also works if you log-in to iCloud.com via a web browser.
