Microphone stopped working

How do I get the microphone to work in iMovie....Preferences is set correctly, shows that its picking up sound. However in iMovie its not working. External microphone is the same....

iMovie external mic stuck at zero volume. The voice over mic volume goes to zero when I switch to external mic (using the Focusrite Scarlett interface). I used the exact same set up a couple days ago and it worked fine. Checking the system sound the mic is getting a signal but iMovie won't allow me to use it. I tried deleting iMovie preference but that didn't work. What happened to change this?

iMovie: Why can't I hear my Microphone until after I recorded my voice? I have I mic plugged in to a PreAmp and going "Line In" to the Input on my Laptop, I can see that there is audio coming in cause when I hit the Microphone icon to start the Voice over, The meter is moving to my voice. When I start to record the voice over, I can hear the music track but not my voice until I listen back to what I recorded. Dose anyone have a clue of how to fix this problem?

Try going to System Preferences>Security & Privacy>Privacy. In the Privacy box sidebar, click on Microphone. Then go to the display box and make sure that there is a check mark next to iMovie.
