People will finish updating when Photos is in the Background

Hi All,

So I am running Photos on a MacBook Pro with Mac OS Catalina 10.15.5. I spent probably a dozen or so hours culling photos in one place, and going through the painstaking facial recognition within many photos. At first everything was humming along and the system was working just fine through the thousands and thousands of photos, then it suddenly came up with the message, "People will finish updating when Photos is in the Background"......well I've tried a number of varying suggestion and none have worked.....any thoughts community? Any new ideas or thoughts?

I will call Apple in the days ahead but wanted to ask my peers and colleagues to opine on this subject.

Here's the items I tried

a) Shut down Photos application but left machine on so that it could process in the background...came back 15 hours later ---> No Change

b) Left Photos ON and MAC on (no shutdown) for over 14 hours ----> No Change

c) Deleted a bundle and redid import, same issues

I m having the exact same problem. I let Photos do its thing for 2 days and it recognized about 20+ faces. I then went through a few photos and picked out another 10+ faces. It has now been doing it's thing for 3 days and I keep getting the same message about updating in the background. One thing that may be different is that the search function is no longer working/returning results. If I type a word in such as "dog" or "June 8" I get nothing. I've tried several words with the same result. Not sure what to do next.

Hi,

I have an OPEN case with Apple Inc., they fully acknowledge this issue and problem with the Photos. What they will do is when this issue is resolve the intent is to put this into a future release note that will be bundled with a FIX in a future Mac OS update. The agent was very helpful and we spent time on this, but that's the bottom line.

BTW, one item I learned from this is that the Creative Media Department in Apple is what provides support to Apple Photos.

How large is your library?

The scan for faces and objects needs a very long time to analyse a photo or video for the type of scenes and to recognise people, animals, buildings. My library has a moderate size of roughly 50000 photos and videos, and after the first update to Catalina it took nearly two weeks until most of the people albums had been set up and the message about scanning for faces vanished. With some long videos in the library it may take more than an hour before the number of scanned photos and videos will change at all.

Hi, I wanted to reply, this is over 8 days now, photo library as it stands now is about 22,000 photos. I stopped scanning any additional photos into the system and have tried the various suggestions offered by the community to no avail.

I probably will have over 20K more photos of some of my family (many deceased) to put into the system as I scan these Kodak, Polaroid, and slide photos as well. After discussing this "Known" issue with Apple creative media, I've stopped for the moment in the event that yes, something will trigger in the system and that this will finish.

It kind of sucks but I'm patient and hopefully Apple will resolve this issue.
